The procedure of breast augmentation or breast enhancement surgery has come a long way in the past 25 years. What used to be a taboo surgery and a costly and potentially dangerous one has become fairly standard and much safer. The first area of the actual breast enhancement surgery is the advisement time or counseling. Much of a women’s perception of herself is going to change after breast enhancement surgery. A women needs to understand that changes are also going to take place emotionally and psychologically after the breast surgery.

The second area is going to be the anesthesia. Most women want to be out for the surgery and will choose an intravenous anesthesia so that they are for sure not awake. Some women do not want to be put all of the way out and will choose a local anesthesia. A local shot or anesthesia is not recommended for most breast enhancement and enlargement surgery but is an option in some much less invasive types of breast surgeries. The third area of the actual procedure is the incision. There are several types and places of incision and many times a combination of incisions works best. The next step is to insert the type of breast enhancement that the woman has chosen.

The two most common types are a saline breast implant or a silicone breast implant. The silicone implant is made of a gel and the saline implant is filled with a sterile saline solution. The saline solution is the most popular type of breast prosthesis but also carries the greater risk of malfunction. It is possible that the saline solution may leak into the breast cavity and cause sagging and some discomfort. If this were to occur then the patient must have the collapsed bag taken out and a new one put back in. The type of implant depends mostly on what shape and size that the women is going after. The implant must be inserted and then the incisions stitched up. After the stitching the person is brought out of anesthesia and the road to recovery begins.
